THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME CORONA FERREA - IRON CROWN |
As our aunt recalls, some guests from the Lombardian city Monza where one day suggesting to change the original name 'Corona' into the more interesting alternative: Corona Ferrea. Corona is italian for 'Crown' and this particular 'Corona Ferrea' is a famous piece of artwork that is being kept in the chapel of Regina Theodolinda at the dome of Monza. The golden crown that is embellished with jewels derives its name from one of the iron nails it contains and which, according to Christian belief, was used for the crucifixion of Christ. It was this crown that crowned the Lombardian kings as well as the conquerors of the Roman Empire: Carl the Great in 744, Napoleon in 1805 and finally Ferdinand of Austria in 1838. |
